Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 ½ cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 tsp baking powder
  • 1 tsp baking soda
  • ½ tsp ground nutmeg
  • 1 tsp salt
  • ½ cup unsalted butter, softened
  • ¾ cup granulated sugar
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • ¾ cup buttermilk
  • ½ cup unsalted butter (for glaze)
  • 1 ½ cups powdered sugar
  • 2 tbsp pure maple syrup
  • 1 tsp vanilla bean paste (or vanilla extract)
  • 12 tbsp milk (for thinning, as needed)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a 9×13-inch baking pan.
  2. In a bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, baking soda, nutmeg, and salt.
  3. In another bowl, cream softened butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Add eggs one at a time, mixing well after each addition along with vanilla extract.
  4. Alternate adding the dry mixture and buttermilk to the butter mixture until just combined.
  5. Spread the batter into the prepared pan and bake for 22–25 minutes until a toothpick comes out clean.
  6. For the glaze, melt butter in a saucepan until golden brown, then whisk in powdered sugar, maple syrup, and vanilla paste until smooth.
  7. Pour the glaze over cooled bars and let set before slicing.
