Ingredients

Scale
  • ½ cup unsalted butter, room temperature
  • ½ cup granulated sugar
  • ¼ cup packed brown sugar
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 ½ teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 1 ⅓ cups all-purpose flour
  • ¼ teaspoon baking soda
  • ¼ teaspoon kosher salt
  • 1 tablespoon dutch process cocoa powder
  • Gel food coloring: black and orange

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and line two large cookie sheets with parchment paper.
  2. In a bowl, cream together room-temperature butter, granulated sugar, and brown sugar until light and fluffy. Add the egg and vanilla extract; mix well.
  3. In another bowl, whisk together flour, baking soda, and salt. Gradually add dry ingredients to the wet mixture until just combined.
  4. Divide the dough into two equal parts. Mix cocoa powder and black gel food color into one batch, and orange gel food color into the other.
  5. Chill both doughs for about 15 minutes. Then form balls by pressing pieces of each colored dough together.
  6. Place on prepared sheets with space in between and bake for 12-15 minutes until edges are set.
  7. Allow cookies to cool on the sheet for five minutes before transferring to a wire rack.
